Virgin Galactic is the world's first commercial space line owned by Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group who are planning to provide suborbital spaceflights to space tourists.
Our very own Hal is one of Virgin Galactics 400 customers hoping to make his space dream a reality and will be joined by fellow astronauts Stephen Hawkins, Tom Hanks and many others.
Each year Virgin Group and Abu Dhabi's aabar Investments PJS host their private customer event at Mojave Air and Space Port. During these events, the future astronauts are provided invaluable updates on the progress being made for the company's space flight program and have the chance to meet with the amazing group of engineers, rocket motor scientists, operations experts, pilots - the team behind the dream.
Sir Richard Branson unveiled the rocket plane SpaceShipTwo ("SS2") in December 2009. Built from lightweight carbon composite materials and powered by a hybrid rocket motor SS2 will have a crew of two and room for six passengers. Its planned trajectory will make it a suborbital journey where each passenger will enjoy a two-hour end-to-end flight and experience approximately six minutes of weightlessness.
SS2 will be carried 16km by carrier aircraft White Knight II at which point SS2 will separate and continue to over 100km to the Karman line - where space begins.
